The Beginning...

Hello, my name is Angelina Killane-Sims, and I am the founder of AAngelsNJ, a heartfelt grassroots nonprofit established by me as I drew inspiration from my own valiant fight against Stage III breast cancer. Understanding the shock and fear that comes with a cancer diagnosis, I wanted to ensure that no one else in my community would have to face such a daunting challenge without education, information, or support. AAngelsNJ is dedicated to providing essential education, resources, and support services.  While encouraging early detection, I must emphasize that breast cancer does not discriminate based on any factors such as wealth, ethnicity, race, age, or background.  I firmly believe that every individual, regardless of their socio-economic status, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, with the equal opportunity to have access to crucial information that can save lives. Together, we can empower our community to confront their fears and take proactive steps towards their health. Join me and the Angels in our mission to make a difference!

Our Founder's Story

In February 2007, I began experiencing a burning sensation and mild pain in the upper left side of my chest, just above my left breast. I was 39 years old and maintaining a regular fitness routine. I initially suspected a muscle strain and paused my workouts to assess the situation. Unfortunately, the discomfort persisted, presenting itself intermittently on a daily basis. Concurrently, my Ob/Gyn reached out to remind me of my missed annual examination and informed me of his impending retirement at the end of October 2007, encouraging me to visit him before his departure. Given the demands of that year—my aunt’s diagnosis of a rare salivary gland cancer and my role as a bridesmaid in a close friend’s wedding, I scheduled the latest appointment possible. Upon attending my examination in late October, my doctor expressed immediate concern during the breast examination. He presumed that I might have been aware of an issue, but I had no knowledge of the underlying tumor until it was detected. This marked the beginning of a whirlwind experience; the doctor promptly arranged for me to see a surgeon within two days, where a biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of aggressive breast cancer. The news was shocking for both my husband and me, as we embraced, uncertain of the path ahead. We soon learned that my treatment would involve an aggressive protocol, commencing with chemotherapy, followed by surgery and radiation. We opted to delay the start of chemotherapy until after Thanksgiving, planning to inform our daughters, family and friends afterward. My treatment journey commenced on December 2, 2007 with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. After enduring numerous surgeries, I knew I wanted to dedicat myself to supporting others through their breast cancer journey. That incited the birth of AAngelsNJ (Angie's Angels of New Jersey), with a mission to  provide educational resources and guidance, emphasizing the critical importance of knowing your risks, family history, performing self-examinations as young adults and beginning mammograms starting at age 40. Together, we can enhance awareness and ultimately reduce the amount of breast cancer related deaths in our community due to late-stage breast cancer diagnoses.
